Bert Jansch RIP
October 5th, 2011
It is with deep sadness, I have just learned of the passing of Bert Jansch, he was a true talent and innovator, who' s music touched many, in particular Rory, who found not least a kindred sprit but a close musical friend.
Our introduction to Bert was his 'Birthday Blues" album, which opened an appetite for Jansch's music and later his extraordinary further work with the legendary 'Pentangle'.
Following my brother's demise, Bert's biographer Colin Harper (Dazzling Stranger), introduced me to the musician to see if I might assist Bert in sorting out his recorded catalogue (which lay across many record labels) so as to enable a definitive collection release of Bert's songs, I duly obliged and was honored to be asked. This resulted in the release of 'Dazzling Stranger - The Bert Jansch Anthology' in 2000.
This music giant was a soft spoken, almost shy man, who reminded me of the similar qualities he had in common with my brother, such as his incredible musical integrity. At that time, it was pleasing to learn from Bert of the friendship the two musicians had.
In the course of our conversations about his musical works, Bert asked if I was aware of his works with my Rory prior to his passing, I informed Bert that I knew from Rory of collaborations but of nothing certain, with that, Bert said I'll make you a copy of these recordings as a thank you - this resulted in "She Moved Thro' the Fair / Ann Cran Ull" which featured on Wheels Within Wheels (album launch party photos with Bert)
God Bless you Bert and my sympathies to Lauren and Bert's family.
Love and respect
